Summer 2021

We’re really disappointed that we can’t offer an in person course this year, and we know that playing your instrument over Zoom won’t ever be the same as playing together. But we’ve been loving our virtual Play Away Days and it was great to have the chance to ask our participants in February what they’d like to see more of at SScOT! Answers ranged from film music, improvisation, composing, conducting and more…. so during the holidays we’re offering two great activities:

  • Pick’n’Mix – four days of workshops covering all sorts of things you wouldn’t normally get on a SScOT course, from composing to conducting and more!
  • The third in our series of Virtual Play Away Days, this time featuring the iconic music of James Bond!

Read on to find out more.

How will it work?

The Pick and Mix workshop week will run on the mornings of 13-16 July 2021 and is an opportunity to get to know some of SScOT’s experienced tutor team – and dip your toe into some areas that we don’t normally touch on during the SScOT residential week! Over the four days there will be composing and conducting sessions that build on each other, plus one-off sessions. All the sessions will take place via Zoom.

The Virtual Play Away Day on Saturday 17 July is a workshop led by our experienced tutors, conducted via Zoom, and is open to anyone playing a string or wind band instrument at grade 2+ and aged 16 or under. Find out more

What’s on?

Sessions will run 9.45am-12.30pm Tuesday 13-Friday 16 July, with the Play Away Day on Saturday 17 July from 10am-12.30pm.

Each morning will feature sessions on Conducting, composing, improvising and more – all led by our brilliant SScOT tutors.

Who can take part?

SScOT Virtual Events are open to any child aged under 16 who plays a string or wind band instrument. We recommend a minimum level of grade 2, though please bear in mind there will be less individual support available than there is at our in-person events – participants should be reasonably confident sight-reading and playing along with a recording.

What does it cost?

The Pick’n’Mix workshop week costs £50, and the Play Away Day costs £10 – or sign up for both for the reduced price of £55.

Financial support is available for those who are unable to pay for the events. Please contact [email protected].

How to sign up

Applications for the Pick’n’Mix week are now closed.

If you have any queries please contact Kate on [email protected].
